Step 1: Gather Materials
The first step in building an A-frame picnic table is to gather the necessary materials. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2×4 lumber for the frame and supports
- 2×6 lumber for the tabletop and benches
- Deck screws
- Wood glue
- Saw (circular saw or miter saw)
- Drill
- Measuring tape
- Clamps
- Sandpaper
Step 2: Cut the Lumber
Once you’ve gathered your materials, it’s time to cut the lumber to size. Use a saw to cut the lumber according to the following measurements:
- 2×4 lumber:
- Four pieces measuring 30 inches in length for the A-frame supports
- Four pieces measuring 29 inches in length for the A-frame supports

Step 3: Assemble the A-Frame Supports
Next, it’s time to assemble the A-frame supports. Take two of the 30-inch 2×4 pieces and two of the 29-inch 2×4 pieces and connect them at the top with a 30-inch 2×4 piece. Repeat this process to create the second A-frame support.
Step 4: Add the Cross Supports
Once you have both A-frame supports assembled, it’s time to add the cross supports. Attach the 30-inch 2×4 cross supports to the A-frame supports using deck screws.
Step 5: Add the Tabletop Supports
Next, attach the two 56-inch 2×4 pieces to the inside of the A-frame supports, about 18 inches from the ground. These will serve as the supports for the tabletop.
Step 6: Attach the Tabletop
With the supports in place, it’s time to attach the tabletop. Lay the four 72-inch 2×6 pieces across the supports and attach them using deck screws.
Step 7: Add the Bench Supports
To add the bench supports, attach the four 10-inch 2×6 pieces to the inside of the A-frame supports, about 14 inches from the ground.
Step 8: Attach the Benches
Finally, it’s time to attach the benches. Lay the two 72-inch 2×6 pieces across the bench supports and attach them using deck screws.
Step 9: Sand and Finish
Once you’ve assembled the picnic table, sand it down to remove any rough edges or splinters. You can then finish it with a coat of outdoor sealant or paint to protect it from the elements.
