Building A Bedroom Dresser: A DIY Woodworking Project

A bedroom dresser is not only functional, but it can also be a statement piece in your bedroom. Rather than buying a pre-made dresser, you can customize your own by building it from scratch with a DIY woodworking project. This can also be a cost-effective way to have a quality piece of furniture that fits your specific needs and style.

Here is a step-by-step guide to building a bedroom dresser.

Materials Needed:

  • 3/4-inch plywood for the dresser box and drawer bottoms
  • 1×4-inch lumber for the drawer frames
  • 1×6-inch lumber for the drawer fronts
  • 2×4-inch lumber for the legs
  • Drawer slides
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Drawer knobs or handles

Tools Needed:

  • Table saw or circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Brad nailer or hammer and nails
  • Clamps
  • Tape measure
  • Square

Step 1: Plan and Design

Before beginning the project, plan and design the dresser. Determine the size and style of the dresser, as well as the number of drawers you want. Make a detailed sketch or blueprint of the dresser, including the dimensions and measurements of each part. This will help guide you during the construction process.

Step 2: Cut the Wood

Using a table saw or circular saw, cut the plywood into the necessary pieces for the dresser box and drawer bottoms. Cut the 1×4-inch lumber into pieces for the drawer frames and the 1×6-inch lumber into pieces for the drawer fronts. Cut the 2×4-inch lumber into pieces for the legs.

Step 3: Build the Dresser Box

Assemble the dresser box using wood glue and screws. Use clamps to hold the pieces together while the glue dries. Attach the legs to the bottom of the dresser box using screws.

Step 4: Build the Drawer Frames

Using wood glue and brad nails, attach the 1×4-inch lumber to create the frames for the drawers. Be sure to measure and mark the spacing for the drawer slides to ensure that they will fit properly.

Step 5: Install the Drawer Slides

Install the drawer slides on the inside of the dresser box and on the drawer frames. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation.

Step 6: Attach the Drawer Fronts

Using wood glue and brad nails, attach the 1×6-inch lumber pieces to create the drawer fronts. Be sure to measure and mark the spacing for the drawer knobs or handles.

Step 7: Sand and Finish

Sand all the wood surfaces using sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots or edges. Apply wood stain or paint to the dresser and drawers, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow the finish to dry completely.

Step 8: Attach the Drawer Knobs or Handles

Attach the drawer knobs or handles to the drawer fronts using screws. Make sure they are level and centered.

Step 9: Install the Drawers

Attach the drawer slides to the back of the drawers and insert them into the dresser box. Make sure they slide smoothly and fit snugly.

Building a bedroom dresser can be a rewarding DIY woodworking project that not only provides a functional piece of furniture but also allows for customization and personalization to match your style and needs. With some basic woodworking skills and the right tools and materials, you can create a beautiful and unique dresser for your bedroom.
