Are you looking to add some charm to your backyard space? An outdoor bar is a great way to do just that. You don’t have to be an expert woodworker to create a beautiful and functional outdoor bar, with a little bit of planning and the right tools and materials, you can create the perfect gathering spot for entertaining guests.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to build an outdoor bar:
Materials Needed:
- Pressure-treated 2x4s for the frame
- 5/4×6 deck boards for the countertop and shelving
- 1×6 tongue and groove boards for the sides
- 4×4 posts for the legs
- 1-1/4” deck screws
- 2-1/2” deck screws
- Wood glue
- Exterior wood stain or paint
Tools Needed:
- Miter saw
- Table saw or circular saw
- Jigsaw
- Drill with drill bits and driver bits
- Clamps
- Speed square
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Cut the frame and legs
First, you’ll need to cut the frame pieces to size. Using pressure-treated 2x4s, cut two pieces to the length of your desired bar, and two pieces to the width of your desired bar minus the width of the two end pieces. Cut four 4×4 posts to the height of your bar.
Step 2: Assemble the frame
Using wood glue and 2-1/2” deck screws, assemble the frame by attaching the end pieces to the two longer pieces. Make sure the corners are square by using a speed square. Then attach the legs to the frame at each corner using wood glue and 2-1/2” deck screws.
Step 3: Add the sides
Using 1×6 tongue and groove boards, attach the sides to the frame using wood glue and 1-1/4” deck screws. Make sure to leave an overhang at the front of the bar for the countertop.
Step 4: Cut the countertop and shelving
Using 5/4×6 deck boards, cut the countertop to size and the shelving to fit between the legs. You can also cut any additional shelving you may want to add.
Step 5: Install the countertop and shelving
Using wood glue and 1-1/4” deck screws, attach the countertop to the frame, making sure it’s flush with the front overhang. Then attach the shelving between the legs, using wood glue and 1-1/4” deck screws.
Step 6: Cut the front panel
Using a jigsaw, cut a decorative shape into the front panel of the bar.
Step 7: Finish the bar
Sand the entire bar to smooth out any rough spots or edges. Then, apply your desired exterior wood stain or paint to protect the wood from the elements and give it a finished look.
Step 8: Add finishing touches
Add any additional touches you may want, such as a bottle opener or towel rack. You can also add a roof to your bar to provide shade on sunny days.
Building an outdoor bar is a fun and rewarding woodworking project that can add value and charm to your backyard space. With the right tools and materials, and a little bit of time and patience, you can create a beautiful and functional gathering spot for entertaining guests or simply enjoying a cold drink on a hot summer day.
